Free and Open Source Content Management Systems - Wordpress

Wordpress is an open source content management system that provides simple yet powerful semantic publishing platform. It is also fast and light and on system resources. It is completely customizable with thousands of plugins, themes, and widgets providing a feature rich approach to website development and maintenance. Wordpress pages can be edited and managed using desktops, smartphones and tablet as well. It is not just a CMS but also a content management framework. It was created by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little and was derived from another blogging tool b2/cafelog. It is now actively developed and managed by Wordpress Foundation.

Wordpress manages every aspect of development workflow. It helps in creating initial draft, grammar and spelling correction, and allows collaborating and reviewing of the content. All pages are generated dynamically using the database and the templates each time a page is requested by a viewer. It has more than 50000 plugins and themes.

It is built using PHP and MySQL and was first released in May of 2003. Its latest stable release, at the time of this writing, Wordpress 4.7.1 was released in January 2017. It works with operating systems such as Windows, and Unix-like systems. WordPress generated code is W3C and XML-RPC compliant; XML-RPC being an open XML standard that allows different systems to communicate with each other.  It also supports an extended version of the Blogger API, MetaWeblog API, and finally the MovableType API. It is licensed under GNU GPL version 2 or later
