NetBeans is an open source integrated development environment that provides a simple and user-friendly approach to software development. It provides an extensive set of program development tools such as editor, visual icons to invoke services, inbuilt servers. The IDE allows deploying, running, and testing of applications. It is one of the most widely used IDEs and certainly the most popular for Java based development. It also supports other languages such as C/C++, PHP, Apache Groovy, and HTML5. In Java itself, it supports development of all Java application types such as Java SE, Java Swings, Java ME, Java EE, JavaFX, and mobile applications.
NetBeans is designed as a set of modular software components known as modules that are combined to form the IDE. Modules are included for program profiler (for monitoring purpose), CVS, different language support, GUI editors and tools, servers, etc. Also, users can extend Netbeans by adding their own modules.
NetBeans is maintained by Oracle Corporation which released its most recent stable release at the time of this writing, NetBeans 8.2, in October 2016. Netbeans itself is written in Java and works in most popular operating systems such as Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and Solaris and other operating systems that support a compatible JVM. It is also localized and available in more than 25 languages. It is released under dual licenses - GPL 2 and Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) v1.0. Some more features of Netbeans include:
- User interface and settings management.
- Storage and Window management
- Allows refactoring and version control.
- Support for Maven and Ant based project systems
- Supports for Apache Tomcat, GlassFish Enterprise Server v3 WebLogic 9 and JBoss 4 support servers.
- Support for PHP includes debugging with xdebug, unit testing with PHPUnit and Selenium, PHP 5.3 namespace and closure, and support for Yii, Zend and the Symfony web-application development frameworks.
- Support for Java Persistence, EJB 3 and JAX-WS frameworks.
- Support for Java EE dependency injection, Spring Framework 3.0, and OSGi frameworks.
- Provides tools for XML schema, UML modeling, SOA visual design, and web services orchestration (for BPEL)
- Includes NetBeans Visual Library
